An Exhibit in Woolwich Takes On the Gendered Nature of ‘Women’s Craft’

The deliberate use of sewing, weaving, knitting and ceramics in creating art became part and parcel of a larger feminist movement.

The concept for the show is lofty, with some exhibition materials tracing women’s connection to thread to the three fates of Greek mythology, who controlled “the thread of life” for mortals. Other materials point out embroidery as “an essential tool for abstract thought” as well as a method of self-actualization. Of the latter, writes Russo, “Thread used for aesthetic purposes alone is a bold choice. The very existence of embroidery is a feminist statement, so much more than merely a pastime.”
