The Open Space of Possibility: James Parker Foley on crafting “Head Above Water”

A glowing figure hangs suspended within a landscape matrix of blues in James Parker Foley’s Head Above Water. The oil painting fits into a lineage of spiritual and religious figuration – arms open, head bowed, body suspended, this person almost takes on the posture of a crucified Christ. But this image lacks the violence of the crucifixion. The figure’s arms are lower, receptive and accepting, and an infusion of light suggests blessing or healing.
